B-CC’s field hockey team took down rival Whitman two goals to none in their sectional semi-final match-up on Monday. The Barons got out to an early lead after a strike from junior captain Ava Viquiera hit the back of the net just ten minutes into the game.
The fully occupied, blackout-themed crowd at Guckeyson Memorial Stadium erupted into a frenzy, and B-CC bore down on defense, keeping the score 1-0 until halftime. It was a back and forth battle, as both teams had several scoring opportunities.
But with just over five minutes left in the game, senior, Maggie Lucas, put away the dagger, sealing the victory for the Barons and advancing the squad into the sectional final Wednesday at home against Walter Johnson.
Because the Barons lost to Walter Johnson last year in the first round of the playoffs, senior goaltender, Emma Volkers, says that they are more motivated to win. “We have 12 seniors, and this is our last chance to win together,” Volkers said.
B-CC looks to build on what has been a successful season so far by defeating Walter Johnson on Wednesday and moving on to the regional championship against the winner of the Churchill vs. Wootton game.
